The Collaboration on the Theoretical Foundations of Deep Learning is a research initiative consisting of eleven leading researchers from eight institutions, funded by the NSF and Simons Foundation. Its goal is to tackle the theoretical challenges surrounding deep learning, aim to enhance its applicability, and develop innovative methods. The project focuses on understanding the mathematical frameworks that explain the practical successes of deep learning and addressing its drawbacks. It promotes diverse participation and offers programs for postdoctoral and visiting researchers, with many activities hosted at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing at UC Berkeley, including summer schools and workshops.
